چکیده

• Coxeter groups with respect to the standard generating set [5, p. 45, Exercise 26], the argument being that of Solomon [18]; • virtually abelian groups with respect to any generating set [4]; • two-step nilpotent groups with infinite cyclic commutator subgroup with respect to some generating set [19]. (On the other hand, it is shown in [19] that if G has Heisenberg rank at least 2, then G has a finite generating set A such that G has transcendental growth with respect to A! In particular, all higher discrete Heisenberg groups H2, H3, . . . possess transcendental growth series.) • solvable Baumslag–Solitar groups 〈x, y|xyx−1 = yb〉 with respect to a generating set 〈x, y〉 [9]; • amalgam groups (= colimits) of certain non-positively curved triangles of groups [10].

Graph manifolds with boundary are virtually special

Let M be a graph manifold. We prove that fundamental groups of embedded incompressible surfaces in M are separable in π1M , and that the double cosets for crossing surfaces are also separable. We deduce that if there is a ‘sufficient’ collection of surfaces in M , then π1M is virtually the fundamental group of a special non-positively curved cube complex. We provide a sufficient collection for ...

A Combination Theorem for Special Cube Complexes

We prove that certain compact cube complexes have special finite covers. This means they have finite covers whose fundamental groups are quasiconvex subgroups of right-angled Artin groups. As a result we obtain, linearity and the separability of quasiconvex subgroups, for the groups we consider. Our result applies in particular to compact negatively curved cube complexes whose hyperplanes don’t...

Fundamental Classes Not Representable by Products

We prove that rationally essential manifolds with suitably large fundamental groups do not admit any maps of non-zero degree from products of closed manifolds of positive dimension. Particular examples include all manifolds of non-positive sectional curvature of rank one and all irreducible locally symmetric spaces of non-compact type. For closed manifolds from certain classes, say non-positive...

Cubulating Graphs of Free Groups with Cyclic Edge Groups

We prove that if G is a group that splits as a finite graph of finitely generated free groups with cyclic edge groups, and G has no non-Euclidean Baumslag-Solitar subgroups, then G is the fundamental group of a compact nonpositively curved cube complex. In addition, if G is also wordhyperbolic (i.e., if G contains no Baumslag-Solitar subgroups of any type), we show that G is linear (in fact, is...
